SE1 EP1: Why sex matters and how gender-based medicine can save lives – Dr Alyson J. McGregor

In this first episode of the Elevat(Her) Podcast we are joined by Dr Alyson J. McGregor, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital and author of the book “Sex Matters: How male-centric medicine endangers women’s health and what we can do about it”.

Here we discuss how the current medical model has been built on men and the consequences this has had and continue to have on women’s health (spoiler alert: women’s health is not just OB/GYN). Some of the topics covered include:

-The importance of sex and gender in medicine and research
-How women metabolise drugs differently to men
-Pain responses in women vs men
-What we can all do to take advocacy for our own health
